It's about time, Google Today is an exciting day in the world of Google. As I'm sure many of you already know, Google is not just a search engine. For more than 5 years now, Google has offered web based services for email, documents, calendars and chatting. These services, called Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar and Google Talk, have been used by millions of people around the world, but there has always been one thing that is strange about them. For Five years now, they have been in Beta! Just in case you need a reminder, here is the definition of Beta: | | "Beta is a nickname for software which has passed the alpha testing stage of development and has been released to users for software testing before its official release. It is the prototype of the software that is released to the public." | | Obviously, this does not quite match Google's definition of beta. Over the years, many people (including me) have wondered if Google would ever take their products out of the beta stage. Well, today is the day. Just yesterday, Google announced that they would be officially be taking Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar and Google talk out of beta! This is great news, seeing that it probably should have been done nearly four years ago. PS: For those of you that use Gmail and still like that "beta" feel, google made it so you can still have the beta logo at the top of your screen. Just go to the "labs" link and turn on the "back to beta" feature. ~Gary. Did you like this news? Maybe not? Tell us by clicking the link below and rating the tip. Normally, this wouldn't be too big of a deal, even for a fox follower like myself, but the developers are touting some pretty major features and improvements this time around. It warrants a look, so here's a quick run-down. Faster Browsing – Mozilla states that Firefox 3.5 runs almost twice as fast as 3.0. This is due to a new kind of JavaScript engine that processes incoming information more efficiently. Private Browsing – Taking a token from Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8, Firefox users are now able to surf the Internet with total anonymity. Nothing from your session is kept except downloads and saved bookmarks. Better late than never, I guess! Tear off Tabs – Tab bar getting too cluttered, but you don't want to re-browse to a site? Just grab a tab and rip it off! You'll be given a whole new window to work with! There's also a host of other improvements to existing stuff like Session Restore, the Awesome Bar, Customization, History Clearing and anti phishing and malware protocols. If you're a Firefox user click Help>Check for Updates to get the new version! For more info, go over to Mozilla.com for a more detailed rundown. Q: When I visit certain Web sites, I often get the error message of "Done, but with errors on page." What does that mean and is there anything I can do to fix it? Please help! A: Well, to begin, this error usually only shows up in Internet Explorer and it mainly has to do with JavaScript. If the Web site you're trying to view uses JavaScript, you may run into a script related error, which triggers the "Done, but with errors on page" message. It is usually generated by an error in the site's code and unless you have access to that code, you probably won't be able to fix the error yourself. Once the problem hits a Web site's code, only the developers of the site can get in and fix it. It looks like this, by the way: However, when that error pops up, you should still be able to see most of the site. Just keep in mind that some of its parts may not function correctly. You might have a missing image or animation here or there, but most of the site should still be visible. Now, I know some of you may be worried about the error affecting your computer. You may be thinking that it's going to harm your PC. Well, I assure you it won't. The problem lies within that Web site only and there's no way it could damage your computer. Plus, if you go and visit other sites, you'll see that they load up just fine. And once the creators of the other site fix their code, that one will be viewable again as well. In addition, if you're a Web site designer or editor yourself, you'll want to keep an eye on your site and make sure the "Done, but with errors on page" message doesn't pop up at any time. If it does, just go in and look through your source code. The problem usually comes from an improper syntax, an incomplete code or a script that is placed in the wrong HTML section. Just take a look at those things and you should be able to fix the error rather quickly. Then your site will be back up and running the way it should be. As you can see, this error message isn't one to panic about. It's unfortunate that it happens, but there's not really anything you can do about it yourself. If there's any way you can contact the designer of the Web site, do so. They may not even know there's a problem, but if you tell them, I'm sure they'll get it fixed right away. Otherwise, you'll just have to sit tight and keep checking back until the problem is solved. Luckily, it's not an error message that can ruin your whole day. At least it shouldn't! ~ Erin Did you like this tip? Let us know by rating or adding to it here: http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/4425 --- Q: Can you please tell me if e-mail addresses are case sensitive? I see them typed out both ways, so I was just wondering which was right. Thanks for your help! A: We here at WorldStart have talked about URLs being case sensitive before, but it never even crossed my mind to write about e-mail addresses. That's all going to change today. Here we go! Let's say one of your closest friends just set up an e-mail account and you ask them what their new e-mail address is. They write it down for you on a piece of paper and when you go to e-mail them, you realize they wrote it in all CAPS. So, you sit there and ponder for awhile if you're really supposed to type it in all CAPS or not. Will it make a difference? If you do, will your friend still get your e-mail? If you don't, will they still receive it? You have so many questions! Well, I can tell you if you're ever uncertain as to whether or not an e-mail address is case sensitive, it's likely it's not. Most ISPs (Internet Service Providers) and other e-mail clients don't care which way an e-mail address is typed. That means you can pretty much type it out whichever way you please. For example, STEVE@WORLDSTART.COM is the same as steve@worldstart.com. Either way you type it, the e-mail will still go through successfully. However, there are some exceptions. There are instances where the first part of an e-mail address is case sensitive, but the second part is not. The first portion consists of a user's username (alias or group name, etc.) and if the e-mail server for that address declares it case sensitive, it definitely matters which way you type it. For example, if an e-mail address is case sensitive, steve, STeve, STEVE or steVE would all be considered different users. You'd just have to check with the e-mail server to see if it requires an address to be case sensitive or not. It rarely happens, but if you're having trouble getting an e-mail to go through, you may want to check on that. Now, you should also keep in mind that spaces are not allowed in e-mail addresses. If you accidentally hit the Spacebar when you're typing out an e-mail address, your e-mail will not be sent out. You can, of course, break an e-mail address up with periods, dashes and underscores, but those are much different than a space. Also, if you're sending an e-mail out to multiple recipients, make sure you separate each of them with a comma. If you just run all of them together, your e-mail client will be confused and the e-mails will bounce back to you. Just a few things to keep in mind when you're working with e-mail addresses. I hope they help! ~ Erin Did you like that tip? I sure did, but let us know what you think by rating or adding to it here: http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/4914 Selecting Just a Portion We all know that MS Word will try to help you out when highlighting text. In fact, if it thinks it's what you want to do, it will select an entire word for you even if your cursor started out in the middle of the word. This can be a great time saver - or a great big headache! Obviously, it all depends upon what you want. Many of you probably know that you can turn this feature off in Word's options. (See the Computer Tips article "That's Not What I Selected!" for users of older versions of Word. For Word 2007 people you need the Advance Options, Editing Options section and then uncheck "When selecting, automatically select entire word".) But, let's face it - if we turn the feature off because it's bothering us right now then when we want it later we've got to go back and turn it on. So, as far as I'm concerned - that's out. For my keyboard enthusiasts you're thinking about the Shift key combined with arrows to get the job done. Excellent choice, but what about the people who like to use the mouse? Can they temporarily get around the whole word selection problem? You bet. If you're a mouse user then here's what you need to know: - First, when you start your partial highlight, be sure to place the cursor where you want the highlight to begin.
- Now start moving the mouse. Should the highlighting jump to include the entire word then stop and just slightly move the mouse back the other way.
- You should find that your selection went back to where you started and doesn't include the whole word again.
In older versions of Word you may have the same issue on the other end of your highlighting if you're trying to select a partial word from the left side. Just use the same trick and move the mouse back slightly to get just the letters you want. Word 2007 you may find behaves a bit better. Once you stop the whole word highlight with the mouse movement it doesn't start up again during that particular selection. Voila! Select exactly the text you need without making huge changes to your Word options. ~ April Did you enjoy this Office Tip? Let us know by rating or adding to it here: http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/selections-in-msword --- One Update Takes Care of Them All When you use MS Word do you find yourself updating the exact same information in many different files? For example, maybe you have a weekly sales figure that is put into several different Word files each week. Do you open all the files and change the information in each and every one? Even with a copy and paste process it still can take quite a bit of time. Or, is there a simpler way? Maybe a way to update the information once and all the documents make the change? Of course - why else would I ask?? Here's the plan… Create and save a file with only the information that is frequently updated. Now copy that information. Next we're off to the file where the information actually belongs. Once there place the cursor where you want the information to be inserted. Now it's time for Paste Special to do its job. In older versions of Word it's located on the Edit menu. Word 2007 has Paste Special in the bottom half of the Paste button located on the Home tab of the Ribbon. When you're in the Paste Special dialog box you need to select Paste link. Now click OK. Save the file. Repeat the Paste Special process into all the files that should contain the data. The next time you need the information updated in all the documents simply open the file with only the information in it - change the information - then save it. Now open the other files. You should find that the update has been completed in all of them. There is one important piece of information that should be noted here… the link is specific to the location of the information file where it was first saved. If you move it then you're going to have to set new links - so it's best to be sure that you create that first file in a location where it can stay. And there you have it… One update can really take care of them all! ~ April Awesome, Awesome Office Tip! This also includes both a world-class Anti-Virus (one of the easiest, most comprehensive AVs I've ever used) and a really top-notch Firewall! Either one retails for more than we're selling the entire suite for! WOW! PLUS - it destroys spyware, adware, malware and more. OK, put it this way - if it was made to attack your system, this is going to seek it out and destroy it like a battalion of ticked off Marines! You can get lost in the alphabet soup of abbreviations floating around - HTTP, FTP, HTML, PHP, ASP and on and on. Ever wonder who keeps track of this stuff? The answer is The World Wide Web Consortium. The World Wide Web Consortium, or W3C, is an international consortium that has worked to develop standards throughout the Web since 1994. These standards, called W3C Recommendations, help ensure that the websites we view are set to a standard that makes it easy to both design, develop, and view. The very goal of the W3C is to help create a single World Wide Web that is capable of growing long-term and is accessible to everyone. The value of the W3C in today's Web is extremely important. There are many devices today that are capable of carrying the Web, such as typical internet browsers, mobile and smart phones, and PDA's just to name a few. The W3C's Recommendations help to make sure the Web can be viewed on all of these devices. They also offer validation services to help developers create websites and Web applications that follow standards and that can be viewed by you or me. Most importantly, the W3C furthers the Web's ability to enhance communication, strengthen commerce, and boost our ability to gain and share knowledge with others. That is a quick snapshot of the World Wide Web Consortium. So the next time you open up your web browser or mobile phone and browse to whatever website you choose, you have the W3C to thank for making it possible. They are out there working to improve the Web (and create a lot less headaches). ~Mike Did you learn something from this tip? Have something to add? You can do it all by clicking the link below. http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/what-is-the-wc3 --- No More Indexing Did you know that Windows XP and Vista keep a record of all the files you have saved on your hard disk? Why do they do this? Well, it's basically used for when you do a search for a particular file or folder on your hard drive. Since they both remember everything you have, it makes this process go much faster. On the other hand though, there is a downside to this. Because your computer has to index all of the files you have stored on your hard drive, it slows things way down when just trying to find that particular one you're looking for. It will drag out the normal file commands, such as opening and closing as well. So, if you don't usually search for files on your hard drive in this way, I suggest turning the indexing feature off. It will speed things up so much for you. Heres how you do it. For Windows XP: 1.Click on Start, Control Panel. (Note: You must be in the classic Control Panel view for this tip to work). 2.Double click Administrative Tools. 3.Double click Services. 4.Double click Indexing Services. 5.Click on Stop and then click OK. For Windows Vista: Almost the exact same process here, only instead of "indexing Services" you'll look for "Windows Search". Stop that service and enjoy increased search speeds within Windows! Once you have the Indexing or Search option stopped, your computer will be able to find any of the files or folders you want to access much quicker. Everything will just work so much faster and you and I both know, you can't beat that! Enjoy! ~ Shantala Ramamoorthy How about that? But have you ever wondered about the reverse? Where exactly are those short URL’s sending you? Well now you can find out! With Long URL Please you’ll be able to reveal the URL behind the shortened version. There are two ways to use it. If you use Firefox, you can just install the Firefox extension. Clicking the link to install it will take you directly to its page in the Add-ons for Firefox directory. Click the green Add to Firefox button, and it will install it. Super easy! If you’re not using Firefox, and have a different browser (except IE 8 it didn’t work for me there) just drag the Long URL Please box up to your bookmarks bar. It is a java application that does the same thing as the Firefox extension. You’ll no longer have to wonder what’s hiding behind that shortened link! Pretty cool, right? http://www.longurlplease.com/ ~Amanda Was that a good Cool Site? Tell us by rating it or adding to it here: http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/long-url-please --- Totally Looks Like This is a super fun site where people submit photos of things that totally look alike! Navigation is setup blog style so just scroll down the page, and click the Next button or the page number you’d like to go to. Some of the look-a-likes are obviously trying to look like the other image as sort of homage to the original, and some are just coincidental and that makes them even funnier! If you’d like to make your own looks like image you’ll need to use the Look-Alike Builder, which can be found on the brown navigation strip near the top of the page. This will take you to the Builder application where you can start creating your look-a-likes! You’ll need to either upload a picture or pick one from the ones they’ve provided you with. You’ll build the left side of the image first and once you’re done with that side, you’ll work on the right side. Once you’ve got the image how you want it click the blue save button, then fill out the form with your e-mail address, decide whether you want an I Can Has Cheeseburger account, and then click Save again. I made a really fast one, you can see it here. I thought this site was super fun, I hope you will too! http://totallylookslike.com/ ~Amanda Woah, I spent a lot of time on that Cool Site! The program is called Human Body 360 - DVD Professional Edition, and it's actually THREE Programs In One! Anatomy Atlas - High resolution maps of the entire human body. And the "audio pronunciation feature" reads the word to you so you can hear exactly how to pronounce it correctly! This a complete guide to the human body and how it works! And what's really cool is that the different programs all work together so you can drill-down and get as much detailed information as you need! And let me tell you, there's a TON of information here!! Check this out: Over 500 3-D models and animations Over 3,000 detailed illustrations and graphics! All together there's over 5,000 screens that cover virtually everything about the human body! You're gonna love the high resolution images. You can print them out right from each screen! One feature that I thought was really great is something called, the "X-Ray Viewer"! This lets you see different layers of the body at the same time. Here's a screen shot I took of one of the slides. Sorry the screen shot isn't better, but the graphics in this program are so detailed it's tough to show it with a small screen shot! Anyway, I brought up one of the illustrations, which was the muscle system. Then I clicked on the "X-Ray viewer", which has a "slider handle" that you just click on and drag up and down. Wherever you have the slide it shows an "X-Ray" view of the part of the body that you have the slider over! So you can look at one illustration, click on the X-Ray viewer and slide it down and now you can see what's "below" the body system you're viewing! I was looking at the muscular system and right around the neck level I clicked on the "X-Ray viewer". So at that point it shows the circulatory system just below where I clicked! Very cool!!! Here's another feature I liked called, "Virtual Reality" technology lets you move specific anatomical models to view them from a a variety of angles and perspectives. This is one of the 3-D models. Right below the model there's a section with some text that are detailed illustrations you can click on. (Again, I had to make these screen shots small so that I could include them here. The actual photos you see on the program are MUCH larger!) So you can click on an area of the diagram and you quickly zoom-in and get a "close up" view! If you double-click on an area of the photo, it'll bring up a page of text that gives you detailed information about what you're viewing!. Plus you can click on a navigation arrow and now see the same section of the body from the side. Click again and now you see if from another angle! Cool, heh? There's just so much to this program and so many features, I can't list them all. Hopefully this will give you a taste of why I like this so much! And this retails for $29.99 (and worth every penny) but you don't have to pay that! You've not even going to pay half of that! Because today we've got this hugely popular program for just $9.97 and US shipping is FREE!!!
