If so, are you getting a little frustrated with being away from everything you knew in XP? I mean, going from XP to Vista is an extreme change and it can be very difficult getting used to all the new features. I know I felt that way when I first started working with Vista. I was so used to XP and I just felt like the two operating systems were like day and night! But, if you look past all the confusion, you'll find that there are a few things you can do with Vista to bring back the comfort of XP. (I'm not even kidding!) And as a matter of fact, I'm going to tell you how to do one of those right now. In Windows XP, a function I always use a lot is the Run command. It's just an easy feature to work with and it gets me where I need to go. Now, as I'm sure you've noticed, Vista doesn't offer the Run command. Or, does it?! To get the Run option back for yourself, right click on the Start button in Vista and choose Properties. Make sure you're under the Start Menu tab and then click on the Customize button. Scroll down near the bottom of the list and checkmark the box that says "Run command." Once you've done that, click OK. In the next window, click Apply, then OK again. Now, go and click your Start button. What do you see? Yep, the Run command is back and ready for some action. Yes! ~ Erin --- Let's Refresh Today's quick tip may seem a little basic for some of you, but I think a lot of you out there will appreciate this. I get e-mails and even phone calls all the time about such procedures like copy, paste and cut. Since I receive so many requests about those things, I thought it would be a good idea to take a step back and go over them one more time. So, if you ever have trouble doing those little tasks, listen up, because this tip is dedicated to you! We'll go over the basics of copying, pasting, cutting and maybe even a couple others. Here we go! Let's begin with copying. There are a couple different ways you can copy something on your computer. Both are pretty easy to do, so you'll just have to decide which one you prefer. But, before you can do anything else, you have to figure out what you want to copy. Once you've done that, click your mouse button, hold it down and drag it over what you'd like to copy. It will then be highlighted. You can then either right click and choose Copy or you can hit Ctrl + C on your keyboard. Next up is the paste function. It always comes after the copy, because you have to have something copied so that you can paste it. Go to where you'd like to paste your material (in an e-mail, a Word document, etc.) and click your mouse once. Then you can either right click and choose Paste or hit Ctrl + V on your keyboard. That's all there is to it! Some of the other commands you all sometimes ask about are cut and undo. I promise both of those functions are rather simple too, so let's go over them right now. If you ever want to cut something out (a portion of text, a picture, etc.) of what you're working on, all you have to do is highlight it and then you can either right click and choose Cut or hit Ctrl + X on your keyboard. That part of your document will then disappear. Now, what if you're working on something and you make a mistake? You probably want to undo it, right? Well, the easiest way to do that is to hit Ctrl + Z on your keyboard. That combination will automatically undo what you just did. Cool, huh? Yep, just a couple mouse clicks or a few taps on your keyboard will take you a long way! ~ Erin Here's a happy, happy Friday to you all! Make sure you keep reading to learn all about a certain error message and why it's not as harmful as you may think, find out what you should look for when buying a new monitor, learn how you can do quick view changes in MS Word and find out how to do easy special formatting in MS Excel. Also, learn all about the new version of Winamp and find out how you can make your dual monitor life so much easier with the Multi-Mon Taskbar. Q: A: First of all, I want to make sure everyone's clear on what we're talking about. Here's the scenario: you're browsing the Web and you see a Web site you'd like to visit. You go to the site, it loads up and everything seems to be running fine, but then you see that dreaded error message at the bottom of the page. Yep, it says "Done, but with errors on page." It gives you the little yellow exclamation point icon and you know something's wrong. But what could it be? It's just a simple Web site. What could possibly be the problem? (Note: This is what the error message looks like):
Well, to begin, the error usually only shows up in Internet Explorer and it mainly has to do with JavaScript. If the Web site you're trying to view uses JavaScript, you may run into a script related error, which triggers the "Done, but with errors on page" message. It's usually generated by an error in the site's code and unless you have access to that code, you probably won't be able to fix the error yourself. Once the problem hits a Web site's code, only the developers of the site can get in and fix it. However, when the error pops up, you should still be able to see most of the site. Just keep in mind that some of its parts may not function correctly. You might have a missing image or animation here or there, but most of the site should still be visible. Now, I know some of you may be worried about the error affecting your computer. You may be thinking it's going to harm your PC. Well, I assure you it won't. The problem lies within the Web site only and there's no way it could damage your computer. Plus, if you go and visit other sites, you'll see that they load up just fine. And once the creators of the other site fix their code, it will be viewable again as well. In addition, if you're a Web site designer or editor yourself, you'll want to keep an eye on your site and make sure the "Done, but with errors on page" message doesn't pop up at any time. If it does, just go in and look through your source code. The problem usually comes from an improper syntax, an incomplete code or a script that's placed in the wrong HTML section. Just take a look at those things and you should be able to fix the error rather quickly. Then your site will be back up and running the way it should be. As you can see, the error message isn't one to panic about. It's unfortunate that it happens, but there's not really anything you can do about it yourself. If there's any way you can contact the designer of the Web site, do so. They may not even know there's a problem, but if you tell them, I'm sure they'll get it fixed right away. Otherwise, you'll just have to sit tight and keep checking back until the problem is solved. Luckily, it's not an error message that can ruin your whole day. At least it shouldn't! ~ Erin --- Q: A: As you mentioned in your question, you know there are several different kinds of monitors you can buy. Most sellers offer the 17", 19" or 21" (which is known as the Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) and it is most like a TV screen, but much sharper in image). Now, there are probably larger versions available out there today, but for your needs, we'll just stick with those three sizes. Now that we have the sizes covered, let's check out the prices. The 21" monitor is obviously going to cost the most, simply because they weigh the most and take up the most space. If you're really thinking about getting a 21," you'll want to thoroughly check them out first. You'll need some room to spare on your desk for it to fit and you'll want to be sure of the quality you're getting. On the other hand, 17" and 19" screens are pretty similar in cost. You may pay approximately $50 to $100 more for a 19" over a 17." Once you choose your size, you have the choice of getting either a regular shaped monitor or a flat screen. And to add even more to your plate, there is a regular flat screen monitor or an aperture grill monitor, which is vertically flat. Regular flat screens are mostly curved vertically and horizontally. The aperture grill will give you thin black lines along the screen when you're viewing a white background. That can be a little annoying sometimes (unless you like that kind of thing), so you'll want to keep that in mind as well. Of course, the different sizes will accommodate for how much black line you will see. Okay, I have more choices to throw in the mix for you. You can also pick to have an LCD monitor if you want. LCD monitors are what come with laptops. With everything else, LCDs come with some advantages and disadvantages. For example, some advantages are a smaller sized screen in thickness, they don't give off as much heat, they use less power and they have a more crisp and clear display than some other monitors. On the other hand, some disadvantages are they're more expensive, they're a lot more fragile than the other types of monitors, they can easily produce screen defects and they sometimes cause color and contrast problems. Now, according to some reviews I was looking at, most people go with a 19" monitor for size. The rest of the choices depends on how important the display image, cost, etc. means to you. There are obviously several choices to be made when choosing a monitor, just as when you're buying a new computer or printer. But, if you do your homework, you'll be able to find the perfect new monitor for your PC. No doubt about it! ~ Erin Have a question for the newsletter? Submit it at the link below:
Quick View Changes in Word It seems like everyone has a preference for the way they view their MS Word documents. Some people prefer the Normal View, while others like the Page/Print Layout View. Plus, there's the Web layout and in newer versions of Word, the Full Screen Reading and Draft views. Whatever your preference, it's always a good thing to know how to get to a different view. Sometimes you're trying to accomplish a task that lends itself to a view different from your usual way of seeing things. I bet most of you know you can change views using the View menu or View tab on the ribbon (depending on the version of Word you use). In fact, your choices are the first items on the menu, so you can't miss them! But what if you could change views with a quicker click? You may not have realized it, but there are buttons for your view choices right on the screen the whole time you're working. Take a look at the horizontal scroll bar across the bottom of your document. Follow it all the way to the left. See them? In older versions of Word, on the very left, you have four buttons, which are also known as the view buttons. Newer versions of Word may have view buttons that look like the image below and they're found on the far right side of the Status bar. You can just do a "quick click" to switch from one view to another, no menu/ribbon tabs required! ~ April --- Special Data Formatting: The Easy Way Do you enter a lot of special data into MS Excel, such as zip codes, phone numbers or social security numbers? Ever find yourself wishing the parenthesis and/or dashes would just fill themselves into the correct locations? I mean, wouldn't it be faster if you could just key 5551234567 in for a phone number and have (555) 123-4567 appear in the cell after you hit the Enter key? Yeah, I like that idea too. So, let's see what Excel has to offer! First, you'll need to highlight the cells you're going to work with and then navigate to the Format Cell dialogue window. For those of you using older versions of Excel, you'll go to the Format menu, Cells choice. In Excel 2007, you can get there from the Home tab on the ribbon under the Number section. Click on the little down arrow in the bottom right hand corner or choose "More Number Formats" from the bottom of the Number Format drop down list. Also, for all versions, Ctrl + 1 or a right click and the Format Cells choice works too. With the Format Cells dialogue window open, you're looking for the Number tab. Toward the bottom of the Categories list, you're looking for the Special choice. Take a look at the choices offered on the right hand side. See them? Yep, that's right. All you have to do is choose one of the listed formats (double check that the location choice below is correct, so you'll get the formatting you expect) and click OK. When you return to the worksheet, you'll find that any data entered without the dashes or parenthesis has been transformed. In addition, any new data entered into the cells will not require formatting. Just enter in the digits and let Excel do the extra work for you! ~ April Have a question about Microsoft Office for the newsletter?

New Release: Winamp 5.541 As you may know, Winamp has always prided itself on being a free service and because of that, it has a steady, loyal following. And version 5 is no different, so let's check it out!
Winamp version 5.541 looks good with a completely new interface and it comes with comprehensive file support. The audio support also includes CDA, MIDI, MP1/2/3/4, AAC, OGG, WAV, AIF, WMA and more. Support for video was added in version 5.52 and it continues on in version 5.541 with MPG, M2V, AVI and ASF formats. The new version also packs a good deal into a fairly slim package, with the player incorporating everything you would expect and more, including loop, repeat, ID3 tag support, cross-fading between tracks, 2x CD burning/ripping, Internet TV, radio support and so much more. Winamp 5 also comes with a media manager, 10-band graphic equalizer, visualizations and a playlist editor. You can even upgrade to the Pro edition to get full support for ripping/encoding audio into the MP3 format and integrated CD burning up to 48x speeds. Winamp was born as a very basic media player and it has consistently improved for many years. Its main purpose is to be completely customizable and through the years, many people have contributed to a library that now consists of 20,000 skins and 461plug-ins. When version 5 was released, Nullsoft redeemed themselves in the public eye after producing a much improved player to replace Winamp 3. They didn't need much encouragement, as they justified skipping version 4 by saying it was such a huge improvement, it deserved a higher number! Luckily, they're justified in their opinion, because Winamp offers everything you could ever want in a media player. By using the skins, you can set it to look like the original or the current default, which looks great and puts you in control of all your media. I personally like the minimized player that consists of a small bar you can place on the edge of your screen. Of course, if neither of those agree with your tastes, you can download and try any of the thousand others available on the Winamp Web site. So, you may ask, "What’s new in Winamp 5.541?" Well, allow me to tell you!
So, now that you know, go on and enjoy your new Winamp! ~ Ramachandran Kumaraswami --- Multi-Monitor Taskbar This one's for all you dual screen users out there! I've had dual screen monitors for my Windows XP computer for about two years now and I love them. Most computer users usually keep two or three windows open in the background, but dual monitors allow you to keep them all in sight. It’s really neat! And today, I’m going to show you something I didn't even know was possible. Prepare to be amazed by Oscar’s Multi-Monitor Taskbar! The Multi-Monitor Taskbar (or Multi-Mon) is a free program that can solve a few of the dilemmas that dual monitor users encounter. Once you download the program, I’ll show you all of the features Multi-Mon has to offer. The download link for Multi-Mon can be found right here. Just download it and follow the installation process.
In the past, you’ve probably noticed that it doesn't matter which monitor a program is opened on, because Windows places all of the taskbar items on the primary monitor. But, after you download Multi-Mon, a second taskbar is placed on the secondary monitor. The taskbar has the Windows 98 theme, but it still works like a charm! You’ll notice that Multi-Mon automatically knows when a window is moved to another monitor and therefore, changes the taskbar it's displayed on. Pretty cool, huh?! Another annoyance most dual monitor users have to deal with is moving windows from one screen to another. Sometimes it’s as easy as a drag and drop, but other times, it requires resizing the window multiple times until it fits the right way. What a pain! Another thing Multi-Mon does is add a third button to the upper right hand corner of every window. That button is the Switch Monitor button and if you press it, the window jumps right over to the opposite screen.
One of my favorite features Multi-Mon provides is the clipboard extender. Have you ever wanted to have a few different items on your clipboard at the same time? Well, every time you copy something to the clipboard, it's added to the Extender’s list. You can then pick and choose which text strings you want to paste.
Also, Multi-Mon has support for triple monitor users if there are any of you out there. If you really like Multi-Mon, I recommend downloading the shareware version. It includes both the Windows XP and Vista themes and so much more. You can see all of them right here. Enjoy! ~ Neil Patel If you enjoy our tips, tell your friends. That's what keeps this newsletter growing. http://www.worldstart.com/referafriend.htm

Well, now you can for free with Flight Aware! You’ll find navigation on the left side of the page. It's a light blue menu with the following categories: Live Tracking – There are three ways to use this section. You can put in the flight number you want to track, the airport code to browse the airport activity or if you just want to look around, you can click on the link underneath the Browsing Suggestions header. To enter in airport codes or flight numbers, you need to look to the left, where you will find a form to do so. The form is located just under the site menu. Flight Planning – This section will help you get ready to take a flight. You can find airport information, route searches, weather information and even check out some photos submitted by other members. Photos – Here you can dive right in to the photos other members have submitted. This section alone makes the Web site worth visiting for me! Also, if you decide to become a member, you can even rate the photos. Squawks – Here you can share aviation news, stories, pictures and videos. The Web site community votes on whether they're to be accepted or rejected, based on their importance. You can even get a Squawk Box to put on your blog! Discussions – This is where you'll find the Flight Aware forums. You need to be a registered member to use them. News and Media – Here you'll find news pertaining to the Web site. About Flight Aware – Here you can learn all about Flight Aware since its creation in 2005. At the top of the page on the right, I want to point out two things: the Free Registration link and the Why Register? link. If you want to register, click on the Free Registration link to get started. To find out what you’re getting if you register, in comparison to using the service as a guest, check out the Why Register? section. Enjoy it all! ~ Amanda --- Welcome to Cozi, a free online organizer for families! Here you can keep a schedule of what’s going on from day to day, keep a family diary, keep in touch with your family members with the message system, keep shopping lists and even get reminders. To get started, you’ll want to sign up. Or, if you're still not sure Cozi is for you, you can take a tour of the Web site here. Signing up is easy! Just click on the Sign Up tab and fill out the form with your name, e-mail address and password. The next step is to start customizing your account. You’ll set up a household name, add your spouse, children and agree to the terms and conditions. Next, you’ll log in to your account with the e-mail address you provided and the password you created. That’s it. You're ready to dive in! You’ll see a few things you can do under the Get Started heading. The actions you can take are: type an appointment in the calendar, add items to your shopping list and jot down an entry in your family journal. I love the calendar feature! Not only is it easy to use, but it's easy to edit and you can set up appointments/events for one family member, two family members or the whole family. You can include where the appointment/event is located, the time and even a description. Now, you may be wondering how a site this awesome can be free! Well, they pay for their costs with advertisements that pertain to family needs. I was thrilled to find that it also includes recipes! I was writing out a grocery list when a picture of these delicious cookies came up. I clicked on it and it was a link to the recipe of the day. You can check out the recipe they sent me right here. If at any time, you want to navigate to a specific section, you can use the orange navigation strip at the bottom of the page. To get back to the homepage, you can always click on Home in the upper left hand corner. With families becoming more and more technological these days, this Web site provides a great way to keep your family organized. Give it a try! ~ Amanda Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?
