How Our Homepage Works It's time for another refresher! As you all know, we here at WorldStart debuted our new homepage awhile back and ever since, it seems like there has been quite the confusion about how it works. We get numerous e-mails and phone calls everyday about it, so I wanted to take some time today to explain exactly how our new homepage operates. It's really easy to follow, so I hope you all will take the time to read through this tip as I clear everything up! First of all, we feature a new Tip of the Day and Cool Site of the Day each day and they change everyday. Yep, that's right, we add new tips to the homepage everyday. So, if you happen to miss an issue of the newsletter, when you go to check out the homepage section, the tips will have already been changed. For example, if you missed yesterday's newsletter, but go back and read it today, the tips will be different. They're scheduled to change everyday, so you need to keep that in mind. Now, you can always search through our archives and find the tips you missed, but the link in the newsletter will give you different tips each day. If you want to browse our archives, simply go to www.worldstart.com and click on the Computer Tips tab at the top of the page. From there, you can type keywords in the Tip Search box to find certain ones. Just type in a couple words about what you're looking for and the tip should pop right up for you. So, even though our homepage changes everyday, there's still a way to find the tips you missed out on. Hopefully that puts us all back on the same page again. Oh yeah! ~ Erin You can't stop now! There's so much more to read about. Keep going to learn all about mini CDs and why they're perfectly fine to use, find out how to handle text the easy way in MS Excel and learn all about the special keys you may find on your keyboard. Also, be sure to check out this week's awesome download thanks to Gary and as always, don't miss out on Amanda's Cool Site of the Day!

Q: A: So, you've probably seen them, but have you ever used a mini CD before? You know, they're the ones that look just like a normal sized CD, but they are much smaller. They are becoming more and more popular these days and more companies are starting to use them for their software programs, etc. They are also used for a lot of the computer games that are available today. You can see the size difference in the screenshot below:
So, they may look really cool, but you might be wondering how you're supposed to use them. How can they work in your computer's CD ROM drive if they're so small? Well, it's simple really. You use them just like you would a bigger CD. Each CD comes with a small hole in the middle, so you just have to place that hole over the correct opening on your CD ROM tray. Some CD trays even have an indentation where mini CDs can go. You just place it right in that inner circle and push the tray in. It will work just the same as it would if it were the bigger size. Mini CDs come in various formats as well. The normal size is an 80 mm disc, which can hold about 21 minutes of music or 180 MB of data. There are also some enhanced density versions that will hold about 34 minutes of music and 300 MB of data. How cool is all that? Have you gone mini yet?! ~ Erin Have a question for the newsletter? Text to Excel: The Easy Way Do you frequently copy text from MS Word to Excel? Do you dislike the way it pastes into the cells, causing a nightmare when it comes to formatting your pages? Want a quick solution? Then try pasting your text as a picture! In older versions of Excel, you'll need the Edit menu, Paste Special choice. In Excel 2007, on the Home ribbon, click the down arrow on the Paste button and choose Paste Special from the bottom of the list. No matter the version, you can then choose Picture from the list and click OK.
Your text will then be placed in the worksheet as a picture, floating over the cells, with the same resizing and relocating capabilities as any other picture. Formatting problems be gone! ~ April
Save Big Bucks On Hard Drive Space! Ingenious Hard Drive Dock Pays For Itself! Best Way To Manage Your Extra Files! Here's one you'll really LOVE! Do you use external hard drives for your backups or extra storage? I know I do - well, I used to anyhow! We just found an item you're really gonna be excited about - it's got to be one of the best ideas I've seen for saving some big bucks in storage! It's a Hard Drive Dock and it's gonna be your new best friend! First - the problem: External hard drives are stupid expensive. OK, they are getting cheaper, but ever notice how an internal hard drive of the same size will ALWAYS be cheaper then the external version? Sometimes by a huge margin too! Of course, the internal drive doesn't need a fancy case, switches, or power cords like the external drive does, so it should be cheaper. Now, wouldn't it be great if you could use an internal hard drive outside of your computer for backups and extra storage? That's EXACTLY what this does! This cool little dock lets you use any SATA / eSATA hard drive just by popping it into the dock! (note - that pretty much covers any drive less than 4 years old - and quite a few older than 4 yrs) PLUS it works for regular 3.5" desktop drives AND 2.5" laptop drives - both sizes are covered! So, if you have an old SATA hard drive sitting in a drawer, in an old computer, or whatever - you can get some new life out of it by popping it into this dock! Think of it as an almost free external hard drive! On the other hand, if you're like me and take a lot of photos (or video), you can just buy a less expensive internal hard drive next time you need more space and plug it into this dock! Heck, I got a 300GB drive the other day on sale for $44! An external drive would have been easily three times that much! When you think of how expensive external hard drives are compared to internal drives, you can see this will easily pay for itself the first time you use it! Besides, since I'm just using these for backups and extra storage, why do I need some slick-looking case? I'll save my money, thank you! Plus, just wait till you go to store those internal hard drives - you're in for a treat!! You know how those external drives are big, bulky, and just take up way too much space? Well, when you use internal drives with this dock, you can just stick 'em in a drawer like I do! I'm actually thinking about taking apart a couple of my old external drive cases to pull the hard drives for use with this - I'd love to save some space since I feel like I'm getting overrun with external HDs!!! Worried about speed? Well, this is just as fast as any external hard drive - it's USB 2.0, so it's really, really gonna move your data quickly. You get the same speed and performance of an external HD, without the extra expense and bulk! It's even hot-swappable! Finally, I think these would be great for getting data off other hard drives to copy over to your computer. My sister's laptop just died, so I took it apart and pulled the little hard drive out of it. Since this works with regular size and laptop drives, I plugged it into this dock and we copied all her old files and photos onto a new computer - now that's cool! Your cost? Just $39.97 and US shipping is FREE! No, it's not the cheapest thing we've ever offered, BUT I'll bet you'll easily save the price of this dock by the money you'll save buying internal rather than external drives! It really does pays for itself! http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4397 PS - Note that there is a limited number of these available, so you'll have to hurry or you'll miss out! Don't get stuck with big, expensive external drives - grab one of these today! You'll love it! WOW! Amazing DIGITAL Tire Gauge! Makes Checking Your Tire Pressure A Snap! Save TON$$$ In Gas With The Proper Tire Pressure! Here's an absolutely incredible deal on a Digital Tire Gauge! I love these things! I personally have one and let me tell you - after you go digital with your air pressure readings, you just aren't going back to the "blow out the stick" type gauges :-) It's SOOOO easy to use! Just press it to your valve stem and it will give you an EXACT reading of your tire pressure! PLUS it covers a HUGE range - from a mere 3 PSI to a whopping 99 PSI - this has you covered for just about every type of tire you'll ever run across! What I love about these is there's no guesswork. With the "blow out the stick" type gauges, you are always wondering if you stuck it on the valve stem right, ya know? Heck, I can stick one of those old-fashioned gauges on the valve stem 3 times and get three different readings! Why even bother - my thumb pushing on the tire would be as accurate! With this, all the "mystery" goes away! Not only that, this even includes a handy tire tread gauge to see how much tread you have left ton your tires! How cool is that? Finally, making it easy to check your tire pressure makes it easy to save on gas. Everyone knows that properly inflated tires get better MPG! I think it's time to double check my tires! Oh,and get this - Just $14.97 and US shipping is FREE! It's a heck of a deal - make sure you grab one before they sell out! http://store.worldstart.com/ PS - You guessed it - this is another limited quantity deal. Get to the site early and grab one of these for each of your cars! Give 'em a try - you'll never go back to the old tire gauges!
Web Design Terms So, tell me, are you interested in Web design at all? Perhaps you've been getting into it a little more recently or maybe you're just starting out. In fact, that's exactly why we here at WorldStart have compiled a list of terms every Web designer should know. And you can find that list in the tip on our homepage today. Check it out! How Everyday Things Are Made Do you ever sit and wonder how everyday things are made? You know, maybe you're sitting there using your keyboard and you just stop to think how it was made. Or, perhaps when you were making your breakfast this morning, your mind wandered off in thought about how a coffee maker is made. We all use a lot of different things in a day's time and it's fun to find out how they're all made. And that's exactly what you can do by checking out the cool site on our homepage today! Special Keyboard Keys Have you ever owned a keyboard that has special function keys? You know, the small buttons that run along the very top of the keyboard. Different keyboards have different keys, but the most common ones are an e-mail button, a search button, a connect button (for the Internet) and a calculator button. Some even have a sleep mode function, a volume control right on the keyboard itself and multimedia keys.
As you can imagine, those extra keys are very nice to have around. For example, if you want to get into your e-mail or use the calculator, you can just hit that button one time and the program will pop right up on your screen. It's like your wish lies right at your fingertips! If you've already been using the special keys, that's great and you should keep doing so. If you have the buttons, but don't know how to use them, you should refer to the software that came with your keyboard. Look through the manual and there should be instructions on how to configure the buttons so that you can start using them. Now, every keyboard is different, so it's hard to tell you how to make the special function keys work without skipping over someone, but all the answers should be right there in your manual. Once you get them working, I'm positive you'll never want to stop! ~ Erin If you enjoy our tips, tell your friends. That's what keeps this newsletter growing.
Paint.NET From time to time, I have found myself needing a program for making graphics and pictures. I used to try and use the Paint program that comes with Windows, but I almost always find it to be lacking in features. Because of that, I have been looking for a paint program that has a lot more options and features. After looking for awhile, I came across a free program called Paint.NET. And let me tell you, this program has everything I could ever want! It's easy to use, it's easy to install and did I mention it's free? Let's check it out! First, just take a look for yourself. This is what the Microsoft Paint program looks like:

That's much better! Also, Paint.NET has support for layers, unlimited undos, special effects and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. An active and growing online community provides friendly help, tutorials and plug-ins as well. You just can't beat it! From their site: Paint.NET is free image and photo editing software for computers that run Windows. It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. An active and growing online community provides friendly help, tutorials, and plugins. I can’t believe it's the first week of December and I’m already making Christmas cookies! I figured if I was, some of you might be too and if that’s the case, you may need some recipes. So far, I’ve made a delicious jam cookie and some chocolate chip cookies. But, we also decided to give cookies as presents this year, so I need a bigger variety than my famous Russian Teacakes, Sugar Cookies and Chocolate Chip Cookies! I like this particular Web site for Christmas cookie recipes, because it's like one stop shopping. You can find everything you need right here! You don’t have to browse through a million different sites. Navigation is pretty easy too. There are three sections on the site: left, middle and right. On the left side, you’ll find a side menu with Browse Categories, Popular Collections and Contribute. In the middle, you’ll find a paragraph of text with words linked to sections you can visit. And finally, on the right, you’ll see the most recent comments and a link to the recipe they are referring to. The cookie categories are: Bar, Candy & Fudge, Cookie Cutter, Cookie Press, Cookies in a Jar, No Bake Cookies, Refrigerator Cookies and of course, the More link is where you’ll get a complete listing of cookies, candies, cakes and even beverages you can make to warm up your holiday season! In the Popular Collections section, you'll find topics like Low Calorie, Top 25, Country of Origin and even Baking Tips. I love the baking tips! There is one that helps you troubleshoot recipes as well. That was a lifesaver the other day when I melted my butter on accident, trying to get it soft enough to cream. Also, you can submit your own cookie recipes to share with everyone down under the Contribute heading. Just click the link, read the rules and click the Submit link and an e-mail window will pop up. For those of you who don’t use Outlook or Outlook Express, just copy the address and paste it into the To: line of your e-mail. For example, I use Yahoo! for my personal e-mail. So, when the default mailer pops up, I highlight the address and copy the address and then go to Yahoo!, compose a message and paste the address into the To: line. Easy! I hope you enjoy all the recipes here. I know I’ve found quite a few I think I'm going to try this year. Yummy! http://www.christmas-cookies.com/ ~ Amanda Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?
December Wallpaper Can you believe it's December already?! Well, you know what that means. Yep, new wallpaper is here! You can check it all out here: http://www.worldstart.com/wallpaper/ Enjoy!
