But can I even run Windows 7? Those of you out there that are planning on upgrading to Windows 7 may want to pay special attention to today's tip. We learned about the system requirements for Microsoft's upcoming upgrade awhile back, but what if you're still unsure as to whether or not your PC can handle it? That's where this no-frills, free download from the folks at Microsoft comes in. It's called the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. It's still in the beta stage right now, but from what I experienced, it works just fine.
Simply download the program and follow the prompts. In a couple of minutes (or more, depending on your system) you'll be given a generated report on what requirements your computer meets or falls short of. No more wondering, folks! Q: A: The easiest way to explain why it's not okay to delete some of the updates is because they're there for a reason. If your computer didn't need them, you wouldn't have had to install them in the first place. The updates are there to keep your computer working at its best and if you removed them, you'd basically be undoing the work the updates did to begin with. Plus, removing the updates could put you at risk for security holes or other vulnerabilities and trust me, you don't want that to happen! Now, as you're going through your Add/Remove Programs, you're probably going to think your list is a bit long. But in all actuality, it's probably not as long as it could be. You see, when you run an update for one of the programs on your computer, the new material always overtakes the old. If the program you're using is programmed right, it will automatically remove any older updates you no longer need. It works the same as when you're installing a new version of a program. It's a basic rule that the new overrides the old. So, basically, the updates are already doing the removal work for you. Cool, huh?! The same goes for Windows Updates as well. Those often include several patches and the newer patches always go right over the old ones. Patches are sometimes all rolled in together as well, so either way, you're going to have a shorter list of patches. You can remove individual patches if you want, but again, that can put you at risk for certain vulnerabilities. Like I said before, by doing that, you're just undoing the work of the patch and defeating the whole purpose. Of course, there will be times when you need to uninstall a certain patch because of unexpected problems, but that doesn't happen too often. All in all, your best bet is to just leave the updates alone. It's really not a good idea to weed through your list and uninstall any you may think are unnecessary. A good rule to go by is if they're in your Add/Remove Programs list, they're supposed to be. They're serving a purpose, even if they look like they're just taking up space. They're not hurting anything, so just leave them be! If you really don't like looking at them, you can uncheck the Show Updates checkbox at the top of your Add/Remove Programs window. That will hide all of the updates to make your list look a little shorter. If that makes you feel better, it's a much better option than removing something you might need on down the road. Issues With Duplicates Have a lot of Excel data with a possibility of unwanted duplicates? Looking for a quick way to locate the duplicates? (Maybe a way that doesn't involve sorting the data differently - after all sometimes we just need the information ordered the way it is. Or the worse yet, the scenario where you spend endless time searching through each one hoping to catch all of them.) Are you using Excel 2007? If you answered yes all three times then you're in luck because Excel 2007 has just what you need located in its Conditional Formatting choices. With just a few clicks we can have Excel highlight any duplicated values so that you can decide which one(s) are unwanted and remove them. To start the process, highlight the data to be checked. Next we're looking for the Conditional Formatting button located on the Home tab of the Ribbon.
When you click the Conditional Formatting button you'll be presented with a list of choices. We need the Highlight Cells Rules. From the bottom of the list we need to choose Duplicate Values. The Duplicate Values dialog box will open giving you a few choices.
On the left choose what should be highlighted - duplicate values or unique values. On the right side use the drop down list to choose how the cells will be formatted. If you don't like the preset options then choose Custom from the bottom of the list. You'll be presented with the usual Format Cells dialog box so I'm sure you'll feel right at home setting your preferred style. When everything is set click OK. Voila! Restoring Previously Opened Folders Are there folders you open up habitually every time you start up your computer? If so, did you know that you can set up your computer to open those folders automatically each time you boot up? Windows Vista users need only apply for this one! Here's what you need to do to make it happen: 1.) First, open Windows Explorer or browse to any folder. 2.) Next, select "Organize" from the toolbar at the top of the window. 3.) Click on Folder and Search Options and the following window will open up on your screen:
4.) Now, click on the View tab. 5.) Check the option that says “Restore previous folder windows on log on." 6.) Click Apply and then OK. Now, when you log off, restart or shut down Vista, it will automatically open the previously opened folders on the next boot. Just yesterday, Microsoft launched its newest attempt at securing Windows PCs. The product, called Microsoft Security Essentials, will be a free set of basic security tools and A/V software for windows users. This software package is not intended to be the only security software on a pc, but instead a set of tools that will provide basic protection if a computer does not have a full featured security suite. Currently, MS Security Essentials is in beta testing. As of now, MS is not accepting new users, but intends on opening testing to more users as time passes. While this set of tools may seem like a great idea, many security experts and PC technicians (such as myself) feel that this could backfire on MS. As I mentioned above, MS Security Essentials is not a full featured security suite. If MS does not make this clear to users, they may feel that this set of tools is all they need to secure their computers. This could lead to more infections in the long run if users do not look into a full featured system and opt to only use the MS Security Essentials package. Microsoft's Security Essentials will include basic antivirus and basic malware protection. What it will NOT include is advanced virus scanning, comprehensive firewall, PC tune up tools and Real time Malware protection. Without these more advanced tools, PC users could still be left at risk. While having these basic tools is a great idea for short term protection, MS will hopefully explain that more advanced protection should be used. My enjoyment of this site harkens back to my childhood, when I was desperately trying to pronounce the names in the Bible with no front teeth. My Personal Little Horror Story - A couple years back I was testing some software on my computer. I did the install, rebooted, and the computer was totally useless. I was back up and running in about 45 minutes! Luckily, I had made an image of the drive and I simply restored that image! Having an image is SOOOOOOO much easier then trying to reinstall windows, spending a day getting up to date with your patches, installing all your programs (and trying to find all the serial numbers), and getting all your data back on your computer (assuming there was any left). Why risk lost data, hours of work, and lost of frustration when you can make an image? In an hour you could be back up and running like nothing ever happened! Disk Imaging software is normally expensive too - we're talking $80 or so - and one of the best imaging programs I've run across is actually included with this program! Even if you don't think you're gonna need the recovery software, the disk image software included with this makes it a must-have! As if all the above weren't enough, this also has what it calls a File Terminator! This part of the software can take sensitive files and delete them permanently and forever - nothing can recover them! This is fantastic if you have sensitive information on your computer that you just don't want anyone else to ever had access to! Important financial documents, bank statement, loan info, stock records - I'm sure you can think of a few files on your computer right now that you wouldn't want strangers to have access to! Just right-click any item you want gone forever, and hit Terminate! It's that easy!
